Design Team

The coastal village has been designed by a team of leading Australian landscape designers and architects.

Their response to the brief has resulted in a proposal that will become a leading, sustainable Australian coastal village.

“Our design response was to let the landscape speak. Responding to its unique coastal environment, the masterplan conserves ancient landscape features by nestling community and tourism facilities carefully into the site and extending the National Park. Significant vegetation is retained alongside new access ways aligned to the topography to maintain the headland’s natural scenery.”

Adrian McGregor, McGregor Coxall

“The architectural response is elegant and understated. The natural materials and simple forms that are proposed provide a strong connection to the site. While the individual components of the project have their own visual language, they are united by a coherent architectural vision, that is deeply rooted in a sense of place.”

Seán McGivern, Patrick Kosky, Kerry Hill Architects

“Our design strategy is informed by the down south laidback lifestyle, with the Community Hub consciously referencing a coastal vernacular in scale and form. Our emphasis is providing accessible and democratic spaces that are an iconic feature of local beachfronts. The Cape to Cape Welcome Centre is a stand-alone pavilion that is an identifiable landmark within the foreshore setting to provide a curated selection of experiences for all visitors.”

Dimmity Walker, Space Agency

“It’s exciting to be part of a new vision for Smiths Beach, one that melds the extraordinary landscape and ecology of this location with improved and accessible beach side amenity and world class hospitality. Our holiday homes will nestle into the landform, while our materials palette will ensure that they will blend harmoniously with the landscape.

Peter Hobbs, Hobbs Architects

“Our masterplan vision reinforces a uniquely WA character and identity through a focus on landscape responsiveness. As designers, we seek to draw upon the qualities of the local environment, creating spaces and forms that can celebrate WA’s rich geology, indigenous heritage, climate, and native flora and fauna.”

Sharni Howe

“An important aspect of the development is the variety of dwelling types, allowing many different visitor groups and household types to share this precious place. This flexibility will enable many people to have a wide range of holiday experiences, with holiday homes adaptable, nuanced and tailored for people and place.”

Jennie Officer and Trent Woods, Officer Woods

“In dialogue with the native context of the site – vegetation and topography, we have conceived each holiday home as a piece of built landscape. The raw material palette – a selection of textures and tones from the South West coastline – roots each house within its surroundings and enables it to age harmoniously with the site.”
